Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. will have four (4) presentations at the 2022 AIAA SciTech Forum in January 2022: 1) Buffet-induced structural response prediction of aircraft horizontal stabilizers based on immersogeometric analysis and an isogeometric blends shell approach; 2) multiaxial fatigue damage assessment of repaired composite cruciform specimens using stress ratio dependent fatigue damage accumulation model; 3) A micro-macro coupling and physics informed modeling approach for bearing failure with X-ray CT characterization; and 4) A multiphysics coupling of resin infusion and deformation of fiber preform using customized Star-CCM+ and Abaqus.

On August 31, 2021, Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. was awarded a contract under a NAVAIR Phase II SBIR program to develop a novel buffet load response and fatigue damage assessment tool for an aircraft using combined analytical , test-derived, and instrumentation data. The research will help NAVAIR greatly improve the understanding of buffet formation and identify the key factors that contribute to buffet occurrence. The developed software and the generated flight simulation data can be used to evaluate the residual life of an aircraft under multiaxial random loading spectrum.
ONR Awarded GEM 3-Year Program for Composite Bolted and Bonded Analysis Toolkit for Abaqus (CB2ATA) Development

On August 05, 2020, Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. was awarded a contract under an ONR sponsored 3-year program to build on the current success of our Composite Bolted and Bonded Analysis Toolkit for Abaqus (CB2ATA) tool for a multi-joint system by including physics based models to accurately capture the interaction and evolution of coupled failure modes in the bearing zone of a joint system. A micro-macro modeling coupled with the in-situ X-ray CT characterization to perform the first principal based exploration of complex and interactive failure models in a bearing zone of a countersunk bolted composite structure. A plan for demonstrating and evaluating the effectiveness of using the developed toolkit will be formed by comparing the required number of coupon level tests in generation of bearing and bypass interaction curves. The benefit of using this modeling approach with a small test matrix can be significant if multiple design curves need to be generated at different service loading with different level of initial fabrication induced defects.

On July 7, 2021, Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. was awarded a contract under a NAVAIR Phase II SBIR program to develop, validate, and demonstrate an accurate and efficient modeling approach for high-fidelity 3D stress prediction and failure initiation and propagation assessment of representative flexbeams subjected to multiaxial static and fatigue loadings. The developed tool will be transitioned to NAVAIR 4.3.3 to support acquisition and sustainment of rotorcraft structural components. The tool can be used to implement a damage tolerance certification approach with controllable fatigue damage accumulation under multiaxial loading.

On May 26, 2021, Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. was awarded a contract under a NAVAIR Phase II SBIR program to develop a performance informed additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) technology along with its processing and fatigue damage evaluation toolkit for the rapid repair of corroded metallic structures. Using the AFSD technique, a strong metallurgical bond between the deposited material and side wall can be established to resist the potential debonding. This project will develop one of the key enabling a new repair technology to quickly restore the structure’s previously un-corroded remaining useful life with an acceptable static strength capability.

In May 2021, Dr. Xuxiao Li joined GEM and has become a key player in conducting some of our current projects in the field of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) including exploration of the relationship of process-structure-property-performance (PSPP) for advanced processing and repair of advanced materials and structures. He has also involved in the implementation of the physics informed neutral network for the process optimization.

On March 24, 2021, Global Engineering and Materials, Inc. was awarded a contract under the AFRL Phase II SBIR program to develop an integrated multi-physics modeling tool for the prediction of process-induced defects, dimensional change, and performance variations through a coupled infusion-cure modeling framework for low-cost composite parts manufactured via Infusion Molding. Extensive verification and validation will be conducted on predicting actual flow response, residual stress distribution, and the resulting composite strengths and dimensional change.
